Where Did KT come from?
Kintsugi 金継ぎ
KT is derived from Kin-tsugi which is also known as “Golden Repair”.
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.
The Kintsugi ‘origin story’ dates back to the 15th century where a teapot that was broken was sent for repairs. The repairers stapled the pot together and this fixed the breakage, however ruined the aesthetics of the pot. This prompted the Japanese repairers to seek new ways to repair the teapot, that was more aesthetically pleasing.
Kintsugi is the story of seeing beauty in broken things. As opposed to replacing the pot with a new identical one, Kintsugi allows us to accept the breakage as part of our journey and combining gold dust into the laquer allows us to accentuate the flaws as part of our journey and be better, stronger, more unique and elegant through this journey.
In our experience, patients come to us, wanting a body that existed pre-injury. In most instances this can’t happen, but by utilising the Kintsugi or KT philosophy, we can take each patient, carefully collect their history and lifestyle factors, the pain driving these and create something more beautiful, resilient and unique.
Kintsugi allows us to bring this element into each of our services.
